Renewal due to the end of the meters' useful life

    What is the new meter replacement campaign?

     

    Order ICT 155/2020 establishes that the maximum useful life of low-voltage meters is 15 years from the date of their first installation. Upon reaching this time period, all electricity distribution companies are legally obliged to replace these measuring devices.

    For this reason, all metering equipment connected to e-distribución's low-voltage grid will be replaced with new units, without this change implying an additional cost for the customer.

  • Which meters does the campaign apply to?

    • The replacement campaign applies to all meters connected to e-distribución’s low-voltage network, regardless of whether the equipment is:

      •  Rented
      •  Owned by the customer

  • What do I need to do?

      •  If you choose the rental scheme, e-distribución will manage the entire process, including installation, connection, verification, and maintenance of the equipment.
      • If you wish to own the meter, please visit this link on the e-distribución website, where you will find the steps required to register a meter. 

  • Who will replace my meter if it is on a rental basis?

    • The technician responsible for replacing your meter will be employed by a contractor accredited by e-distribución. The technician will inform you of the reason for their visit and will identify themselves as an e-distribución-accredited technician. You may request to see this accreditation if you wish.

  • Do I need to be there while the replacement is being made?

      • If the meter is accessible, you do not need to be present for the replacement.
      • If the meter is not accessible (for example, if it is located inside the property), you will need to provide a contact person and grant access to the property.

  • What happens if the meter cannot be replaced?

    • If it is not possible to carry out the replacement, the technician will leave a notice explaining why the meter could not be replaced.

      You will then need to contact e-distribución to schedule a new visit.

  • Will the meter ownership status change?

    • No. However, if you own your meter, you may switch to a rental arrangement at any time, and vice versa.

  • Is there a cost for installing the new smart meter?

      • If your meter is rented, the installation of the new meter is completely free of charge. You will not have to pay any amount to the authorized technician carrying out the meter replacement. If you are asked to pay for the service on behalf of the company, this constitutes fraud and should be reported to the authorities.
      • If you wish to install a meter on your own, you must purchase it from an authorized supplier and will be responsible for the full cost of the replacement process. In all cases, the replacement is mandatory and must be certified by e-distribución.

  • Will the smart meter rental fee change with the new meter?

    • No. The rental fee is set by regulation and is € 0.81 per month for single-phase Type V meters and €1.36 per month for three-phase Type V meters, in accordance with Order IET/1491/2013.

  • Will the meter replacement affect the contracted power?

    • No. The replacement does not affect the terms of your contract, such as the contracted power or tariff. 

  • How does the new smart meter work?

    • The smart meter operates in the same way as the one currently installed. The only difference is that it is a newer, more modern device. The replacement is carried out to comply with current regulations, ensuring that all meters meet legal requirements.
