Flow Project

Flexibility in electricity distribution through a local market and electric vehicles in Menorca

Electric vehicle recharging its battery

The "Flow" project is a 4-year project, starting in 2022 and ending in 2026, funded by the Horizon Europe framework program, with a total budget of around 10 million euros. The initiative will test, validate and enhance the so-called "Vehicle-to-X", where energy will be exchanged between vehicles, buildings, and the grid.

The solutions developed in the framework of the project will provide an answer for the mass deployment of electric vehicles to all sectors involved, from energy distribution system operators, in this case, e-distribución, charging point operators, mobility service providers, and infrastructure manufacturers to end-users.

The main objective will be to validate and quantify the benefits associated with the flexibility of electric vehicle charging, implementing the flexibility services in the distribution company, in order to achieve the decarbonization of energy while transitioning towards a sustainable mobility model.

A total of 5 demonstration sites will be set up to determine the impact on various energy systems in the Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy, Denmark, and Spain, specifically on the island of Menorca where e-distribución, leader of the demonstration pilot, is operating.

The project is led by the Institute for Energy Research of Catalonia (IREC) and is formed by a multidisciplinary team, involving academic partners, small, medium, and large companies in the energy and mobility sector, and large European industrial associations.
