Flow Project

Flexibility in electricity distribution through a local market and electric vehicles in Menorca

What is the Flow Project?

Flow is a 4-year European innovation project (2022–2026), funded by the Horizon Europe programme, with a budget of approximately €10 million.

The project focuses on the development and validation of Vehicle‑to‑X technology, which allows for the exchange of energy between electric vehicles, buildings, and the electricity grid.

What is the project's objective?

The main objective of the Flow Project is to:

·        Validate and quantify the benefits of flexibility in electric vehicle charging.

·        Integrate flexibility services into the distribution company.

·        Contribute to the decarbonisation of energy.

·        Advance towards a sustainable mobility model.

Who does the project benefit?

The solutions developed in Flow are aimed at:

·        Energy distribution companies, such as e‑distribución.

·        Charge point operators.

·        Mobility service providers.

·        Infrastructure manufacturers.

·        End users of electric vehicles.

Demonstration sites

The project has five demonstration sites to analyse the impact on different energy systems:

·        Czech Republic

·        Ireland

·        Italy

·        Denmark

·        Spain, specifically on the island of Menorca, where e‑distribución is leading the demonstration pilot.

Who is leading the project?

The Flow Project is led by IREC (Catalonia Institute for Energy Research) and features a multidisciplinary consortium made up of:

·        Universities and research centres.

·        Small, medium, and large enterprises from the energy and mobility sectors.

·        European industrial associations.
