The smart meter

The e-distribución smart meter is more flexible, convenient, and efficient thanks to remote management technology, which has been in operation since 2010 and regulated by Royal Decree 1110/2007Order ITC 3860/2007, and IET 290/2012. This system allows full control over your electricity consumption, with accurate readings and the ability to manage services remotely. Thanks to remote management, more than 12.6 million smart meters have been installed across Spain, with e-distribución leading the activity.

Meters Installed by Autonomous Communities:

e-distribución has installed over 12.6 million smart meters throughout Spain. Below are the figures for smart meters installed by autonomous communities as of the end of 2024:

  • Andalusia and Extremadura: 5.3 million
  • Aragon: 946,173
  • Balearic Islands: 734,605
  • Canary Islands: 1.25 million
  • Catalonia: 4.43 million

Advantages of the Smart Meter

  • Accurate measurements: The smart meter enables precise readings of consumption by period and time, which is particularly useful for customers on tariffs such as PVPC. You can check hourly energy prices on the Red Eléctrica de España website.
  • Faster service: Installation and management of services—such as new connections, disconnections, and line changes—are handled remotely, improving both speed and efficiency.
  • More sustainable: This new system provides constant information on the network’s performance, helping to avoid overloads, reduce distribution losses, improve energy efficiency, and contribute to CO₂ reduction.
  • Secure data handling: The meters are automatically managed via the PLC (Power Line Communications) protocol, ensuring the security and privacy of the information. This protocol allows communication over the electricity network, ensuring data is transmitted with maximum security and confidentiality.
  • Prevents electricity fraud: The system helps detect tampering with meters and improves the safety of installations, protecting users from potential hazards.
  • Smart grids: With this meter, we help build smarter grids that integrate all players in the electricity system: generators, distributors, suppliers, and consumers.
  • Smart homes: The smart meter also supports the development of smart homes, opening possibilities in services such as home automation and electric vehicles.

Smart metering

  • A safe technology

Smart metering is not only an innovative technology, but also a safe one. Many different studies have demonstrated that smart meters are harmless to people and they have been certified according to the corresponding regulations.

Smart grids

  • Distribution

The so-called smart distribution grids open up an endless number of possibilities in relation to energy saving, increasing flexibility or reducing costs.
